A form field can look self-explanatory in an empty design and become ambiguous once someone enters an answer. For a Las Vegas or Henderson business, review one field’s question before approving its appearance.
Give each piece of copy a job
A label identifies the field. An instruction explains a necessary detail, such as a particular format. W3C’s labels and instructions guidance applies to optional inputs too. Add enough information to answer the question without surrounding a simple field with unnecessary directions.
A placeholder is a short hint shown when the field is empty. It disappears during entry, so it cannot replace the label. MDN’s placeholder reference explains this distinction. Approving the wording also leaves the field’s technical association for implementation review.
Copy this field approval card
Use one card per field in your own document. Keep the current wording beside the proposal so the editor can see exactly what you want changed.
- Location: Page URL, form name and the field being discussed.
- Purpose: The business decision this answer supports, approved by the person who handles requests.
- Label: Proposed words identifying the question.
- Instruction: Any essential clarification. Leave this blank when none is needed.
- Example hint: An optional short sample; the question must make sense without it.
- Assignment: Who approves the copy, who implements it and which unresolved question that person must answer.
The purpose line is an internal decision, not extra copy to paste above every input. If the business cannot explain why it needs the answer, resolve that request before polishing the sentence.
Separate meaning from an example
This proposed copy is wholly illustrative; it describes no actual form or business rule. Assume a field asks where requested work would happen. A label of “Project address” and instruction “Address where the work would happen” distinguish that location from another address. A street-address hint alone would not settle the question.
Use the actual approved purpose in your version. This example does not establish which address details your form accepts.
Review the implemented field in context
Compare the empty and entered states: can you still identify the question? Record the actual result. This copy review does not establish overall accessibility conformance.
For rejected entries, use the form-error correction guide. For broader page and phone-use concerns, use the mobile inquiry checklist.
Form copy and behavior belong in an agreed website design scope. Email sales@rank.vegas with the form-page URL, one field label and the unclear question or instruction. Include your proposed wording if available.
