Google Ads Exact Match: Meaning Can Match Different Words

2 minute read · Practical marketing guidance

Different wording can prompt the wrong diagnosis. Before asking someone to change a Las Vegas or Henderson campaign, clarify what the keyword setting means and what your business actually offers.

Exact match considers meaning

Google’s keyword matching guidance says exact keywords can reach searches expressing the same meaning or intent. Square brackets specify the setting. Matching permits auction consideration; it does not guarantee an ad will appear.

Close variants include wording changes

Google’s close-variant definition makes all match types eligible by default, with no opt-out. Exact variants can include misspellings, plurals, reordered words with unchanged meaning and function-word changes. Its English coverage also includes implied words, synonyms, paraphrases and the same search intent.

Rewrite one fictional owner note

Imagine a wholly invented Henderson alterations shop. Its assumed approved offer is replacing zippers on selected customer-supplied jackets after garment assessment. It does not offer repair of an existing zipper mechanism. These are invented service boundaries.

Use [zip replacement henderson] and the illustrative wording henderson zip replacement to frame a discussion.

Initial note: “The words changed order, so exact match failed.”

Revised note: “Word order alone is insufficient. Please explain the actual recorded keyword relationship before recommending a change.”

This is a wording exercise, with no inspected account or observed search. It assigns neither phrase a Google classification and predicts no display or results.

Now consider a customer asking to repair an existing zipper. The fictional offer excludes that work. The service owner can explain this boundary without deciding how Google would treat the wording. Replacement after assessment also does not mean every jacket can be accepted.

Give the reviewer a focused question

For your own business, identify the approved work, the wording that concerns you and the precise assumption you want checked. Ask the service owner to confirm the offer before requesting account changes. Our service-page guide helps explain those boundaries to customers.

When the task becomes reviewing actual queries or proposed exclusions, use the search terms audit. Keep that broader review tied to its evidence.
