An approved brand palette gives a website designer colors to work with. It does not settle which color belongs behind each piece of text. For a Las Vegas or Henderson business, start with the words people need to read, then compare the proposed text and background together.
A gold accent might remain part of the identity while a darker palette color carries the service explanation. Choosing that role is a website design decision, not evidence that the brand needs replacing.
Start with the approved palette and text role
Confirm the exact color values and the owner’s instructions before proposing a pairing. Our website logo handoff guide addresses approved artwork and variants. This review starts after those identity decisions and concerns ordinary website copy.
Name the intended role: a paragraph explaining a service, a short heading or a button label. Keep that role in the discussion. Making paragraph text much larger to accommodate a color choice would change the layout and reading task; choose a suitable pairing for the intended copy instead.
Compare against the relevant text threshold
W3C’s minimum text-contrast guidance uses at least 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for qualifying large text. Large text is at least 18pt regular or 14pt bold, assessed at its actual delivered size. A heading label alone does not qualify it.
Compare unrounded results with the thresholds; rounding up cannot establish a pass. This focused text-contrast comparison does not establish complete accessibility or legal compliance.
Three calculated pairs from a fictional palette
Assume a wholly fictional Henderson business has approved navy #17324D, gold #B8860B and white #FFFFFF. The business, approval and proposed placements are invented. No actual website or user test is represented.
The calculations use solid, opaque sRGB colors and WCAG’s contrast-ratio definition: lighter relative luminance plus 0.05, divided by darker relative luminance plus 0.05. Results below display two decimals; decisions use full precision.
| Text and background | Ratio and proposed text use |
|---|---|
| Gold #B8860B on white #FFFFFF | 3.25:1. Below 4.5:1; only a conditional option for qualifying large text. |
| Navy #17324D on white #FFFFFF | 13.13:1. Meets both illustrated text-contrast thresholds; proposed for ordinary service copy. |
| Gold #B8860B on navy #17324D | 4.03:1. Below 4.5:1; only a conditional option for qualifying large text. |
Propose navy on white for the fictional paragraphs. The gold-on-navy result shows why a dark background alone cannot settle the choice.
Carry the choice into the actual placement
Give the editor the intended role and exact pair, along with any condition on its use. Review the resulting placement after agreed implementation. If the background, opacity, font size or weight differs from this plan, the recorded result needs another check.
These calculations do not cover photographs, gradients or transparent layers. For text over changing footage, our social video playback guide covers that separate review.
